There are many reasons behind the unmatched reputation of Volvo excavators. However, one of the primary reasons they stand out in this market is their exceptional blend of advanced technology and operator-centric design, as exemplified by the integration of cutting-edge hydraulics and telematics systems.
Volvo’s advanced hydraulics ensure precise control and efficiency, enhancing excavators’ digging power and speed while reducing fuel consumption. Telematics systems, such as Volvo’s CareTrack, provide real-time data on machine performance, usage, and maintenance needs, enabling proactive management and minimizing downtime.
In addition to the technological edge that Volvo excavators boast, their appeal is also enhanced by the strong emphasis that Volvo places on operator comfort and safety.
The cabs of Volvo excavators are designed with ergonomics in mind. They feature adjustable seats, intuitive controls, and excellent visibility, thus reducing operator fatigue and improving overall job performance.
Safety features, including enhanced visibility systems, advanced stability controls, and robust structural designs, further ensure a safe working environment by reducing the risk of on-site accidents.
While many of Volvo’s previous excavators have already taken the world by storm, the latest generation, which includes the ECR145 short swing, EC210, EC230, EC370, EC400, and EC500 excavators, is more impressive than ever and is swiftly redefining industry standards.
This current lineup features several impressive new additions that are poised to elevate excavation work to the next level. The following are some of the defining features of Volvo’s latest generation of excavators, as well as some of the things that make them unique:
Volvo’s newest generation of excavators can be powered by renewable HVO100 (hydrogenated vegetable oil), thus allowing for significantly reduced carbon emissions compared to traditional diesel.
Volvo had already launched electric solutions, such as the EC230 Electric Excavator and the EW240 Electric MH. Recently, it has introduced an all-new array of battery electric equipment, further demonstrating the company’s commitment to fossil-fuel-free construction. This includes the release of the EWR150, Volvo’s first-ever electric wheeled excavator.
In Volvo’s latest excavators, the combination of an optimized electro-hydraulic system, a smart cooling system, and engine speed regulation for higher torque at a lower RPM makes it possible to achieve up to 15% better fuel efficiency than the previous generation.
The improved hydraulics also enable enhanced machine control, allowing for smooth and precise movement of the boom, bucket, and other hydraulic components.
In addition, there are now 10 work mode settings, including two related to power and four that relate to automatic ECO modes. The pairing of the new creep travel mode with the boom and arm shock reduction settings will help operators maintain precise control over loads and reduce spillage.
Safety has also been a priority in the design of Volvo excavators, but the newest generation takes that one step further. For example, the Volvo Smart View with Obstacle Detection, which allows operators to maintain 360-degree visibility of their machine’s surroundings, makes it easier to avoid collisions and other accidents.
Volvo Smart View with Obstacle Detection combines camera technology and an advanced radar detection system to distinguish between objects and humans, allowing for increased environmental awareness.
Additionally, various lights have been added to the cab, boom, and arm of Volvo’s latest excavators, which can be especially useful in dim work settings, further contributing to the safety of these new machines.
The cabs of Volvo excavators have always been regarded as a representation of the highest possible quality. However, Volvo has managed to outdo itself with the release of this new generation by adding even more features that enhance ease of use and comfort.
For instance, Volvo has improved the human-machine interface (HMI), making automated boom and bucket movement possible with the Volvo Active Control machine control system, and adding an advanced electrical control joystick.
In addition to these features, which are designed to improve overall productivity, Volvo has also made several other tweaks and design upgrades to enhance the comfort of the cab.
The newest Volvo excavators feature an updated seat design, improved ventilation, and a footrest support that is especially handy for work in sloped environments. They also have an in-cab wireless phone charger, built-in heater/cooler compartments for food or drinks, and larger cab-side mirrors with heaters.
Additionally, the new models feature the latest generation of Co-Pilot, and the in-cab tablet’s large, high-resolution screen can display Dig Assist applications, including on-board weighing and in-field design.
Maintaining an excavator often involves considerable time and expense, primarily due to the frequent need for hydraulic oil changes and system checks.
Although the latest Volvo excavators still require regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance and prevent downtime, they offer a significant improvement in this regard by extending the intervals between hydraulic oil changes, thereby reducing maintenance efforts and associated costs.
The design of Volvo’s new excavators has enabled a remarkable 50% increase in hydraulic oil life, resulting in extended service intervals. For regular hydraulic oil, service intervals have been extended to 3,000 hours, while long-life hydraulic oil can now last up to 6,000 hours before requiring a change. With fewer oil changes required, less downtime will be necessary, allowing for a higher level of productivity.
